Trojan Athlete Honors Convocation!

The following student athletes were recognized this past Monday at the Traverse City Central High School Honors Convocation:

Trojan Hall Of Fame Awards:

Female Athlete of the Year – Emma Dutmers (Alpine Ski & Soccer)

This student is without a doubt the embodiment of a Trojan Athlete.  She competes with pride for her school and her team and she carries herself with a high level of integrity.  She is an excellent student, her work ethic is unrivaled, she constantly strives to better herself, and her ability to focus while encouraging her teammates is remarkable.  Her peers all look up to her as a role model and follow her leadership, and to top it all off she has an infectious laugh that will leave everyone around her smiling.  This student has been a three year member of the Varsity Soccer Team, and four year Varsity athlete on the State Runner up and Regional Champion Ski Team with All-State Honors.

Coach Needham, “This will have been only my second season working with Emma. However, just in the short time I have had the privilege of working with Emma she is without a doubt the embodiment of a Trojan athlete.   There isn’t a doubt in my mind that Emma Dutmers will make just as big an impact after high school as she has here at Central. I am very proud of Emma and I’m blessed to have had the privilege to coach her.”

Male Athlete of the Year – Sam Schmitt (Football, Basketball & Baseball)

This student is one of our top talents.  Our coaches say he is our grittiest athlete, they always give him the toughest assignments, and feel that our teams are at their best with him in the lead as a positive and professional role model.  He is a three sport athlete who has excelled each of his four years at all levels in Football, making the playoffs each year, in Basketball, winning a BNC Championship this year, in Baseball, earning Player of the Year accolades in the Big North, and he will be playing Baseball next year at GRCC.

Coach Schuba,  “Sam is a once in a generation talent. He is a 3 sport athlete who has excelled at all levels. For the basketball team he was our glue guy who guarded the other teams best guard most of the year.  We were at our best when Sam was being aggressive on both ends and utilizing his athleticism.  The best part about Sam is how he handles himself as a young man. He is by far one of the most polite kids ive had the privilege to coach and he will be dearly missed.  No doubt in my mind he will succeed at the next level.”

Dick Mattern Trojan Scholar Athlete Award (Highest GPA):

In 1972, Dick Mattern provided the enthusiasm and inspiration which led to the formation of the Trojan Scholar-Athlete Award. Since then, they have been awarded to outstanding young men and women from each graduating class. These seniors have demonstrated a combination of athletic skills and leadership while maintaining a high level of academic achievement. The recipients of this award symbolize the true Trojan spirit of Traverse City Central High School.

Female Recipient – Aubrey Haddix (Bowling & Softball)

Coach Vreeland, “Aubrey is a two-year member of the bowling program and a fierce competitor. She started with no experience as junior, quickly progressing to leading the team as a senior with a 141 average, up 34 pins over the prior year and 24 from the beginning of the 9-week regular season. (This is especially huge because the adult annual most improved average per league is usually half that over 33 weeks!) Her high game in competition was a 200. Aubrey leads by example; her teammates see her dedication and achievement and up their games as well. Between frames in practice, or on road trips to meets, she organizes epic sing-a-longs videos. We will miss her greatly as she heads off to conquer the world.”

Male Recipient – Ted Roe (Cross Country, Nordic Ski & Track)

Coach Burns, “Ted served as one of our captains on the cross country team this season. He was voted a captain by his team mates because he has demonstrated through his hard work what determination, dedication, leadership, and teaching look like for a Trojan Cross Country runner.   Ted is definitely a young man who lets his actions demonstrate his leadership. He is someone who can be counted on to help in any situation, work with groups of teammates or individuals, and coordinate and carry out directions given by the coaches. Ted is THE young man who makes sure everyone is on the bus, the equipment is loaded, everyone has warmed down after workouts and races, has materials turned in, etc.  He is an extension of the coaching staff- a needed and critical component on a large, successful team. From a coach and athlete perspective, it is hard to argue with his work ethic and desire. Last cross country season, it was in doubt as to whether Ted would be able to run at his true abilities this year. He had struggled through a very debilitating and mysterious abdominal injury that cut his cross country season short and significantly impacted his track season.  However, through patience and very diligent attention to rehabilitation, Ted earned a spot on our State Finals team and ran in his first ever state championship meet.”
