Trojan Boys Cross Country

Team Newsletter #7

Week of September 28, 2020

There is a lot of information in this newsletter. With meets coming up, being changed, and other items please read carefully.  Thank you.

Last Week…

Yesterday we finally got to race together as an entire team.  It felt good to be able to take a bus load of young men together, as a team, and race.  Though it was a bit different than normal, there is a lot to be said about getting up early to catch the bus, sharing time together on trips and prepping on a race morning in terms of team camaraderie.

The racing schedule yesterday had us racing in 3 different waves, so the boys had to warm up off site, be bussed to the course, and then race.  They handled this very well and raced well to boot.  Yesterday our primary goal was working on group running.  If you were there, you saw this happening in each race.  The plan was executed well.  Good cross country teams run this way. Our goal is to be a great cross country team.  All results can be found on athletic.net.

Our boys won the event, as well as the girls team.

Sleep, Hydration, and Good Nutrition. The 3 most important Performance Enhancing Supplements an athlete can use.

Power Hour Fundraiser Update

Our final total for our fundraising effort was over $6200. Let’s just say this FAR exceeded our expectations. Among the ways in which this money will help is that it will go towards eliminating our team debt, Rasho Course maintenance, team awards and awards night, equipment, provide incentive awards for kids (such as our mileage club awards),  provide a fund that we will be able to draw on in the future to help our kids, help with transportation and coaching costs, and provide scholarship assistance for kids who need help with fees for camp or participating.  In addition, from our fundraising efforts the boys will be making a donation to a worthy cause. The boys will decide this in the coming weeks.  We will celebrate our success later this season, at which time the boys who hit our incentives (over $200 and over $300 raised) will receive a prize for their contribution. I will announce our prize winners next week.

Fee Reminders

If you have not paid your participation fee or camp fee, please take care of this as soon as possible.  The player fee can be paid on final forms using a credit or debit card- $105 (the extra $5 is a yearly fee for Final Forms).  The camp fee is $80. All checks are to be made payable to TCC Athletic Boosters. If you have any questions please contact me. Thank you!

Schedule Update

Our schedule continues to change due to COVID implications. The latest is that the BNC Championships are now October 13th.  I am waiting for a location. Also, the Northern Michigan Cross Country Championships have been cancelled this year.  More changes will be occurring this week as the MHSAA will be announcing how the cross country tournament will be conducted.  As soon as we hear from MHSAA, I will send out an updated schedule.

I want to be very upfront about the schedule change.  As we have been saying all season, our entire goal for this cross country season is to have the boys compete.  It has not looked like it normally does, but as we know, nothing is normal this year.  For a large part of our team, the “official” racing season will most likely be completed on October 13 (assuming the entire team will be able to race the BNC meet). However, we are hoping to provide one of two more racing opportunities for the kids of some sort.  I will keep you posted.

Camp Recap

Trojan XC Camp #4 is in the books!  Four weeks ago we were not sure we were going to have a season, let alone the ability to go out for some type of camp.  Well, it happened!  We had two fantastic days of training, fun, and team building. Two hard workouts, canoeing, goal setting sessions, dodge-ball, capture the flag, hiking, swimming, eating, “arts and crafts” and more--we got it in.   Your sons worked hard, played hard and, I hope, got to know each other a bit better.  It was an important way to launch into the next phase of our season.  Thank you for your support!

Racing

Today (Saturday, August 29) we began racing.  This race and our race in Petoskey have been/will be rather emotional.  It has been nearly a year in which  some of our boys  have raced and competed.  Being able to reach this point is quite a milestone.  If today was any indication of how the season will be, we are ok.  The Michigan Cross Country community is fantastic. All of us are in this sport because we want our/your kids to have an opportunity to compete in high school athletics.  The meet at Benzie today was an important step and example of how we can make this work this year.  Please be patient as we are going to be limited in spectating opportunities, etc.  Your kids were awesome and competing-- that is what matters.

The racing results……   today our kids finished 2nd in the large school division.  This was a very solid result for us.  Drew Seabase ran a time of 15:15, which placed him second and was the 2nd fastest time ever recorded by a Trojan XC runner.  We had guys run very close to their personal bests and had 2 freshmen make their Varsity debut-- Zach Truszkowski and Lukas Reimers.  Given where we are at in our training cycle, this was a good team performance.  The results can be found on athletic.net   Have your son help you navigate to this website if you are unfamiliar with it-- it will have all meet information for the upcoming season   www.athletic.net

On Tuesday, the boys who did not race today will be traveling to Petoskey to make their season debut.  This is an excellent opportunity for our kids to run varsity and score some points!  I will post the varsity and JV teams to the boys google classroom by Sunday evening.  The time schedule for Petoskey is as follows: (all races are at Petoskey Middle School)

  • Bus leaves Central High School at 6:30 a.m. (we have to do temp check and screenings before leaving)

  • Varsity Boys race at 9:00 a.m. and Varsity Girls at 9:30 a.m.

  • Junior Varsity boys/girls race at 10:00 a.m.

  • Leave Petoskey approximately 11:00 a.m.

  • Bring money in case we stop for lunch-- I will announce Monday at practice.

  • Please Note: As of today (Saturday) each boy will be allowed one family member to spectate. This is based on allowable crowd numbers.

Sponsorships

Thank you to those who have agreed to be a sponsor of our program.  Your support is so valuable and greatly appreciated.  If you are interested, it is not too late! Please let me know or fill out the forms found in the team booklet and send in with your son.  I will be finalizing our banner and submitting the artwork for print on September 1.

Fundraiser- Power Hour

Your son received his packet/Pledge form for our “Trojan Cross Country Power Hour” which I explained in an email earlier this week.  Pledges are due by Thursday, September 10. The Power Hour will be held on Saturday morning, September 12th. All pledges must be collected by September 18th and turned in.

Captains

It is my pleasure to announce our Team Captains for this season.  They are Matt Ritter, Jacob Schultz, and Drew Seabase.  These three young men were chosen by the coaches.  They accepted the position after meeting with me.  Leadership is hard and they have demonstrated that they are ready for the opportunity and challenge.   Throughout the season last year, this past spring and  summer, and early season- these three have shown by their actions that they are up to the challenge. Each brings a unique set of skills, that together can guide our team. An additional piece is that they are supported by a strong senior class, who will  assist in supporting  and guiding our team.

Next Week’s Schedule

Monday (8/31) Practice at 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday (9/1) Race at Petoskey. For those not racing Petoskey, practice at 9:00 a.m. at CHS with Coach Lukens and Coach Houghton
Wednesday (9/2) Practice at 3:30 p.m.

Thursday (9/3) Practice at 3:30 p.m.

Friday (9/4/) Practice at 9:00 a.m. at CHS

Saturday (9/5) Captains Practice. Time to be announced.

NOTE:  We will not have practice on Monday, September 7th.  Practices will be at 3:30 each day once we begin school on September 8th.

Thought for the Week

Undervalued by athletes today:

1. Sleep

2. Nutrition

3. Hydration

Overvalued by athletes today:

1. Wearable Technology

2. Workout Tracking Apps

3. Posting Workout Results to Social Media

If the basics are not taken care of, the bells and whistles matter little.

Thank you for your support!

Go Trojans!

Trojan Cross Country Weekly News and Updates #2

Trojan Boys Cross Country

Team News and Updates #2

Week of August 24, 2020

We have had a very good first two weeks of workouts. We have three primary groups within the team and our training for each of these groups is reflective of their fitness level at this point and experience.  Continuous, gradual progression is our goal. This increases fitness at a rate that our bodies can absorb the training by incorporating hard work with recovery.

Now is the time that aches and pains--especially among our younger, less experienced and less fit runners- begin to crop up. Communication is the name of the game.  Also, proper rest, eating well and hydrating is really important.  Thanks for helping us with this by monitoring your sons. Let us know if there are things you want us to be aware of that may not be getting shared by your son.

Time Trial

On Friday, we had our team Time Trial at the Civic Center on the dirt path.  As we shared with the boys, a time trial serves as a good “test” as to where we are at in fitness at this time.  We have been training hard and ran this in the middle of a very hard training segment.  The highpoints were the competitiveness of the boys and a strong showing by our super freshmen group.  Good work guys!  Thank you to our parents who showed up to cheer!

It felt good to have a sense of normalcy again…… The results were shared with the boys and put on our team website.

Team Store

The deadline for ordering from the store was extended until Sunday evening (Tonight August 23rd) at 11:59 p.m.-- just in case.

Camp

This week we will be heading to our modified cross country camp.  We are fortunate to be able to at least have 2 days away to spend some time together before school and the season begins in earnest.  Tomorrow I will send our daily camp schedule and a “to bring” list.   We will leave Wednesday and Thursday mornings from CHS as soon as the boys have been checked in.  They are to be at school at our normal time- 8:00 a.m. We will return to CHS each day at approximately 5:45 pm. They must have their masks and they are not to bring their cell phones.  In case of emergency, you may contact me at 231-649-0843. I will send a Remind message to alert you when we will be back, but plan on 5:45 as mentioned above.

Race(s)

YES!!! We finally get to race!  This is what most of the boys have been waiting for since the March 13 shutdown.  Our team will have 2 opportunities to race in the next 10 days.  Ten (10) boys will be racing this Saturday (August 29) at the Benzie Central Invitational.  Due to COVID 19 and MHSAA restrictions, we will only be able to race 10 kids.  Details will be shared with those racing.

On September 1, all others who do not race at Benzie will be racing at Petoskey.  I will share race information as soon as I have it.

Next Week’s Schedule

Mon and Tuesday- Practice at 8:00 a.m. @ CHS

Wed and Thursday- Camp

Friday- Practice at 8:00 a.m. @ CHS

Saturday- Race at Benzie for those racing, others are to run on their own or with a teammate(s)

Looking ahead to next week (week of August 31), we will begin having 3:30 p.m. practice.
